Organization - Major Peewee finish in top 8 at 13U Provincial Eliminations
Submitted By Hamilton Cardinals on Sunday, August 4, 2019
The Hamilton Cardinals 13U squad consisting of 12 Major Peewee and 3 Minor Peewee players travelled to St. Thomas Ontario this past weekend to battle with the 22 Best AAA teams in Ontario.  The atmosphere was electrifying and the game was played at its highest level.  Our 13U team proudly advanced to Round 5 of the double knock-out tournament, finishing in the top 8.

After a tough start to the season and in true Hamilton form, the Major Peewee team put their hard hats on and got to work in the weeks leading up to the Provincial elims. The extra practice, training and instruction helped turn the team around at the plate, offensively and defensively.  The teams development took their opponents by surprise and made themselves and their Coaches extremely proud.
In Game 1 Hamilton defeated their COBA rivals, the Oakville As for the first time all season, with a final score of 11-4. Game 2 had a match up with the Etobicoke Rangers, a team that had defeated and tied them already this season; but that would not be the case this weekend. As the Hamilton Cardinals beat the Rangers 7-5.

In Game 3 the Cards faced off with undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in Ontario...the Brampton Royals.  In the late innings, the Cardinals battled back and brought the team within striking distance, but a few errors cost them and they lost their first game 15-11.
Being a double knock-out format the Cardinals knew going into Game 4, it was a must win! The team was set to face the Windsor Stars for the very first time ever.  Knowing that battling an unfamiliar squad would have its challenges, the team knew their effort and execution at the plate, on the mound and on the base paths would have to be spot on….and it was. The Cards had the lead for the entire game, but in the bottom of the 6th the Stars made a run for it with an offensive charge and tied the game 11 a piece. The Stars were the home team; so heading into the top of the 7th the Cardinals knew that not only did they need the go ahead run, but also a few more for insurance as the feisty Stars were not going down without a fight!  The Cards tacked on 5 more runs and headed into the bottom of the 7th winning 16-11. After allowing 1 run and then loading the bases the Cardinals defence dug deep and stranded the top of the Stars order on the base paths. This thriller ended in a final score of 16-12.
The Double knock out bracket found the Cardinals facing the very tough Brampton Royals yet again in Game 5.  The Cardinals left it all on the field, but the sheer offensive power of the Royals proved too much for the Cards and they recorded their second and final loss of the tournament.
While not the ending the team was hoping for, it was an amazing accomplishment and a testament to the hard work and dedication they have put in. They sent a clear message to the other Major Peewee AAA Ontario teams…..Don’t Count Us Out!
The Cardinals will take this success and bout of confidence with them as they prepare to battle it out once again with those top teams at OBAs in a few weeks.
Congrats to the team and their Coaches on a very successful weekend!
